What is the Shop Technology Timeline? It is a guide that I built for automotive repair shops to follow to become more technologically advanced in their operations. A more efficient and productive shop leads to higher profits and a better customer experience, which we all desire. I have had the pleasure of visiting many shops and talking with many automotive repair shop owners, and one thing I have discovered is hesitance to move towards using more technology in their operations. Don’t get me wrong, there are some that dive right in; yet, I’ve found that a majority do not. I think a lot of that has to do with a lack of familiarity and understanding. I can relate. When I was first learning to use Quickbooks and understanding a P&L and balance sheet, I had those same reservations. But, over time, I dove in and learned enough to be dangerous with accounting basics. I’m no accountant; I’m a technologist, which is why I created this chart to help someone who doesn’t have 25+ years of slinging code to navigate the waters of technology in an auto repair shop.
If you go to the site http://www.shoptechnologytimeline.com, you will not only see the timeline, but you will also see solutions offered in our current market to help solve some of these touch points. For instance, following is a subsection of Web Presence:
Who provides solutions? Do it yourself –
- Wix.com – free website builder
Hire the Pros –
DO THIS NOW! Facebook – Create a Facebook page. Forget the other social media platforms, and post personalized content.
Full disclosure: I do own a product that solves a few of these issues, yet you will notice that I list other alternatives. Why? I’ve seen that though we shop owners share that common core, we are unique and different. One tool that works in your business may not fit mine. That, I have seen many times.

Architect/President at autotext.me
As an auto repair shop owner of Golden Rule Auto Care, Chris Cloutier realized the need for a better way to communicate with his customers as he observed how communication gaps created bottleneck situations and wasted valuable rack time. With 20+ years experience as a software developer including employment stints at Southwest Airlines and Wyndham International, Chris had seen the benefits of the marriage of software and customer service. With the entrepreneurial passion to create an innovative solution to solve a common industry problem, Chris designed autotext.me, a tool that dually functions as a visual workflow management system and as a means for keeping customers engaged and informed by providing status updates throughout the stages of the vehicle repair process.
